GSTN Makes emSigner v3.3 Mandatory for New DSC Tokens from 21 September 2026
GSTN has released an advisory requiring users with newly issued DSC USB tokens (dongles) issued on or after 21 September 2026 to upgrade to emSigner version 3.3. The change is intended to ensure compatibility with new-generation DSC tokens.
Key Points—GSTN Makes emSigner v3.3 Mandatory for New DSC Tokens
- Existing DSC Users: No action is required if your existing DSC certificate and USB token are working properly. and existing emSigner versions can continue to be used with older DSC tokens issued before 21 September 2026. The advisory states that emSigner v3.3 is backward compatible with existing tokens.
- New DSC Token Holders: Users who obtain a new USB token on or after 21 September 2026 due to fresh issuance, renewal, replacement, or migration must install emSigner v3.3. and older emSigner versions will not support such new DSC tokens.
- System Requirements for emSigner v3.3: Windows 10/11 (64-bit), Linux (Ubuntu 18+), or macOS, 64-bit operating system, minimum 8 GB RAM, Minimum 64 GB storage, Java 1.8 (OpenJDK or Oracle Java) and Java 9 and above are not supported according to the advisory.
- Supported Browsers: Chrome 16+, Firefox 6+, Microsoft Edge, Safari 6+, Opera 12.1+
- Validity of Existing DSCs : DSCs already downloaded on FIPS 140-2 compliant tokens on or before 21 September 2026 will remain valid until their expiry date. and the advisory clarifies that the migration does not invalidate existing DSC certificates.
Practical Impact for Tax Professionals—GSTN Makes emSigner v3.3 Mandatory for New DSC Tokens
- For GST practitioners, chartered accountants, companies, and taxpayers, there is no immediate impact if the existing DSC token is functioning normally. However, any newly issued or renewed DSC token after 21 September 2026 will require emSigner v3.3 for GST portal filings and DSC authentication. Failure to upgrade may result in DSC detection or signing issues.
- From 21 September 2026, emSigner v3.3 is mandatory for newly issued DSC tokens on the GST portal, while existing DSC users can continue with their current setup unless they face compatibility issues.
