Documents Required to Apply for NRI Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card

When Non-Resident Indian (NRI) applicants apply for a Permanent Account Number card, they need to submit the following documents:

Documents Required to Apply for NRI Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card : NRI applicants are required to file below documents when applying for a PAN card:

  • Photographs: Two recent passport-sized photographs.
  • Proof of Identity: Copy of passport.
  • Proof of Overseas Address:  Copy of overseas bank statement. Or A residential permit issued by the Foreigner's Registration Officer in India or the State Police Authorities.
  • Additional Documents (if applicable):Copy of Person of Indian Origin card or Copy of Overseas Citizen of India card.
  • NRE Bank Account Statement: Statement showing at least two transactions in the last six months, duly attested by one of the following:
    • Indian Embassy
    • Consulate
    • High Commission
    • Apostille
    • Bank manager where the account is held

Additional Documents (if applying with an Indian office address):

  • Address Certificate: Issued by the Indian employer.
  • Employer’s PAN Details: Permanent Account Number details of the employer.
  • Appointment Letter: Copy of the appointment letter from the concerned company with an address in India.

These documents ensure that Non-Resident Indian’s can smoothly apply for and obtain their Permanent Account Number cards, necessary for financial and tax-related transactions in India.

Difference Between NRI PAN Card and Regular Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card:

The key difference between an Non-Resident Indian’s Permanent Account Number card and a regular Permanent Account Number card is in the application form (Form 49AA for NRIs and Form 49A for residents) and the specific documentation required to prove identity and address. The cards themselves are identical and serve the same functions.

No Distinction in the Card Itself: There is no difference between an Non-Resident Indian’s  PAN card and a regular Permanent Account Number card in terms of the physical card or the number issued. Both serve the same purpose and have identical features.

Application Form: The primary difference lies in the application process:

  • Residents of India: Use Form 49A.
  • NRIs, OCIs, and Foreign Citizens of Indian Origin: Use Form 49AA.

Documentation: The documents required for Non-Resident Indian’s differ slightly to accommodate their overseas status. While Indian residents submit local proofs, NRIs need to provide:

  • Overseas address proof.
  • Passport copy.
  • Proof of NRE bank account transactions, if applicable.

Purpose and Usage: Both types of Permanent Account Number cards are used for the same purposes, including filing income tax returns, opening bank accounts, investing in securities, and other financial transactions in India.

Fee for NRI PAN card application: Fee for applying for an Non-Resident Indian’s Permanent Account Number card is Rs. 107 for addresses in India. If the Permanent Account Number is to be sent to an overseas address, the fee is Rs. 989.

Timeline and Process for Obtaining an NRI PAN Card : 

  • It generally takes 10 to 15 days to receive a PAN card after submitting your application and required documents. The process may take longer if there are errors or discrepancies in the application or documents provided.

Steps to Track NRI PAN Card Status:  

By following these steps, you can efficiently manage and track the process of obtaining your NRI PAN card.

  • ·Go to the UTIITSL or Protean (NSDL e-Gov) website.

  • ·Look for the PAN card status tracking section on the website.

  • ·Input your acknowledgement number received at the time of application submission.

  • ·Submit the form to view the current status of your PAN card application.

Tracking Your Application:

·After submitting your application, you will receive an acknowledgement number. This number can be used to track the status of your PAN card. You can check the status of your NRI PAN card application on the websites of NSDL e-Gov. 

·Double-check all details in your application to avoid delays caused by errors or discrepancies. Have all required documents attested and ready to avoid any last-minute issues. Regularly check the status to stay updated on any additional requirements or updates from the processing authority.

Converting Resident PAN Card to NRI PAN Card

Key Points to Remember Form 49A is for NRIs with Indian citizenship. & Form 49AA is for NRIs with foreign citizenship. Make Ensure all details are accurate and documents are correctly attested. The process is largely the same as applying for a new PAN card, but it specifically accommodates the status change from resident to NRI. By following these steps, you can successfully convert your resident PAN card to an NRI PAN card, ensuring compliance with Indian tax regulations. To convert your resident PAN card to an NRI PAN card, follow these steps:

  • Go to the official TIN (Tax Information Network) NSDL .
  • Click on the "Apply Online" option. For NRIs with Indian citizenship, select Form 49A. For NRIs with foreign citizenship (OCI or PIO), select Form 49AA.
  • Fill in the necessary details such as your status, name, and other personal information. Enter the captcha code.
  • Click the "Submit" button to proceed.
  • The system will redirect you to the NRI PAN card application form. Fill out the form with accurate information. Provide your overseas address and contact details.
  • Upload the required documents such as:
    • Copy of passport.
    • Proof of overseas address (bank statement, utility bill, etc.).
    • Passport-sized photographs.
    • Copy of PIO/OCI card if applicable.
    • NRE bank account statement (attested) showing transactions in the last six months.
  • Pay the processing fee online using the available payment methods (credit card, debit card, net banking, etc.).
  • After completing the online form, download and print the acknowledgment receipt. Attach the physical copies of the documents mentioned above.
  • Send the acknowledgment receipt and documents to the address provided on the portal.
